Less is more

A few years ago, I went for a happy hour with some friends. We were all a bit tired after a long day of work, and after our first drink, we caught ourselves talking about tidying up.

This was the first time I heard about Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant who became known for her method of organization. In short, it consists of putting all of your belongings, firstly divided by categories, together and then do the sorting. You are supposed to keep only the items that "spark joy".

It sounds funny, don't you think? At least at the time, I could not imagine myself wondering if a dress or a table was still making me happy and sparking joy. In my head, it could even trigger anxiety for some people, but my friend was obsessed with it and kept talking in her defense.

Marie Kondo had her adopting a minimalist lifestyle. What I did not know at the time was that minimalism was also a popular interior design style cherished by lots of people - and not only Marie Kondo's fans. Minimalist style in interior design was conceived in the early nineties.

Today we will talk about this style and why it is still so worshiped. And of course, we will give some hints on how to create a minimalist style at your place!

Where did it come from?

The minimalist design became a concept at the beginning of the 20th century. It was highly influenced by traditional Japanese culture and design. If you ever took some time to observe their culture, you probably noticed that everything is discreet and based on simplicity. The minimalist style was also inspired by the artistic movement De Stijl. The latter means « style », and it was defined by simplicity and abstraction. It was well known for its geometric forms and the use of basic colors. We can mention Van Der Rohe as one of the icons of the movement.

The minimalist style also applies some elements from Industrial and Scandinavian Design. So it is common to find items from these styles in a minimalist environment, such as the monochromatic color palette and the presence of materials such as wood and leather.

And how can you recognize it?

A minimalist interior is defined by straight lines and simple geometric shapes, the decoration is made with few objects, neutral colors and the items have the cleanest and most functional layout possible. The minimalist style’s motto is as simple as its name: less is more. It screams for simplicity, but do not go thinking about a white room with almost no furniture. The idea is to eliminate everything unnecessary, so we can not talk about minimalism without talking about decluttering.

You can see why Marie Kondo was a good reference, to begin with. When you declutter, you make room for new stories. In other words, you will be pushed to reinvent the items that you chose to keep. Every item in a minimalist interior must have a purpose. In addition to being functional, they must add value to the space.

Have you ever stopped to wonder what is really essential for your house? And how you can transform some items into the protagonists of the room? The minimalist style will make you dig deep into your imagination and can teach you how to make a new perspective of a room that was once full of clutter.

Yes, you can have a minimalist design at your place. We will tell you how!

An interior with a minimalist design should be clear, airy, and decorated with few furniture. To maintain this concept, opt for two, or at most three neutral colors. By choosing colors wisely you can create the impression that an environment is larger than it appears. For walls, choose colors such as off-white, beige, or a light gray. The light colors highlight the decorative objects, so it is important to choose these items well. Look for durable furniture, but with a simple design and few textures. Wood, steel, and leather are some of the most characteristic materials of minimalist decoration.

Another important aspect of minimalist design is lighting. If you have the option to use natural lighting, great. When choosing lamps, choose between neon or halogen. Concerning the design of the luminaires, we recommend the models without curved contours, made of metal or copper, which highlight the aesthetics of the environment.

After all, minimalism is about eliminating distractions and focusing on what is essential. If the minimalist style seems interesting to you for interior design, it can also inspire you to adopt some of these principles for your personal life.

Now that you know a little more about this style, what do you think of it? Can you imagine yourself adopting minimalism in your daily life? Tell us about it!
